What's this beetle on my redbud?

I saw several beetles on my redbud, all of them were sucking on the outer edge of a leaf, which explains why most of my redbud's leaves are cupped. The body reminded me of a lightening bug only shorter, and the abdomen was red. Any ideas?

Sounds like a box elder beetle because of the red belly, but they're not supposed to be destructive eating insects, just pesky because they get into everywhere, including houses.
