Mice eating hostas

I know it's those darned mice because I see the holes where they've chewed through the landscape fabric and have found a little place to live. They are also living between the rocks of a little dry rock wall that my son built for me. They've chewed the stalks of the hostas and have taken leaves to their little holes. What are they doing with these leaves at the entrace to their holes? The biggest question is this--how do I get rid of them short of killing them with chemicals? My husband was thinking of getting an animal syringe and injecting ammonia into these holes. Will this work and what should I do to keep them from getting into the garden from the field next door? Any quick replies would be wonderful!!! By the way, we have no pets...

No, injecting into the holes won't help. Mouse traps will. Unless they're voles. In which case, lots of luck.

You were right, it didn't work. We were fortunate enough to know where they were bringing the food to so we lay some traps around and only caught one. We bought some warfarin resistant bait laced with peanut butter and they went for it. Now I'm finding dead mice in the beds which is a good thing but also gross. I also purchased this product called Super Hunter which I was told would work 100% in keeping any critter that licks or bites away from my hostas. I sprayed it around all the plants and rockery and posts and you name it I sprayed and it has worked. My plants are coming back and I don't see anymore leaves being brought to their hideouts. We'll put more bait out and see what happens.
