Whether these grasshoppers might be a problem depends on where you are (Texas?), the weather, and if this a year of the grasshopper. When I lived in Corpus Christi crickets were a problem for a couple of weeks every year although we saw little plant damage. Others, in Texas, tell me grasshoppers can be a large problem, sometimes.
Grasshoppers do have several predators, other than birds, so care in spraying poisons to control them I needed so those predators are not also killed. A grain bait containing " Nosema locustae" can be of some help as well.

How do you know if it is a 'year of the grasshopper'?

I am interested in encouraging birds...can they become a problem for my vegetables? Or do they do more good than harm?

well. i just busted a HUGE grasshopper chomping a massive hole in my precious pumpkin vine! I don't know if I did right, but I ran inside and got my bottle of homemade insecticidal soap and sprayed that beast and any of his tiny brothers and sisters I could find. I just felt so betrayed at the time! I gave you grasshoppers a chance and look what you did! Silly, I know to anthropomorphize the little bugs when they just do what they gotta do to eat...but I digress.

I know I looked wild with my spray bottle in hand in the yard. I would take a step and pause, eagle-eyed for any slight movement. PING! went the grasshoppers and i would spray like mad!

I hope my pumpkin does okay. Gardening is a battlefield! Heartwrenching and victorious and peaceful and joyful and everything all at once.
