Bug ID, if possible

I don't know what to look up, because I don't even know what family these things are in. They look like a cross between a thin beetle and a centipede.

* Western Washington State

* Mostly seen in partly-finished compost.

* A bit less than 1/2" long, very slender, very slinky, no wings, shiny black with a distinctive metallic COPPER band around the middle. I don't know about the number of legs, they're pretty fast.

Any ideas would help to solve my curiosity.

Okay, then try this generalization:
If it moves rapidly, it's likely a beneficial insect/mite.
If it moves slowly, it's likely a plant pest.
