| help! i've just discovered that both my climbing hydrangea and schizophragma are infested with cottony cushion scale bugs. there is so much conflicting info on the internet that i don't know what to do about it, and i don't want to waste time doing something that won't work. both plants are 3 years old, and have climbed about 15 feet up the side of my (stucco) house. i've read that vedelia beetles are the best way to control them, but they don't seem to be commercially available, and i'm very unclear on what other methods work. i try to be very environmentally responsible in my garden, and usually use a minimal amount of insecticidal soap and the like only if absolutely necessary. can you tell me what to do about this? i really don't want to lose these plants. does anyone out there have experience getting rid of these? |

| If the natural predators are not controlling them, and insecticidal soaps are not very effective, the next, least toxic, step is to spray superior oils carefully on the scales. Follow label directions carefully and do not spray if predators and parasites are around. |
