I think we have moles

I have been getting these mounds of dirt appearing on our lawn, right at the edge. The holes themselves appear to be fairly small, about 3 to 4 inches in diameter, so I'm thinking that it's not gophers. We've never had gophers here before but our cat did catch a mole about 7 years ago. Our cats are now too lazy (or too well fed) to solve the problem. Getting a dog is out of the question.

Can you suggest how to get rid of these guys ? I do have a have a hart trap... thanks in advance.

RE: I think we have moles

If you have any earthworms you most likely do have a mole. Most often it is just one since a mole needs around 1/4 acre of territory to find sufficient food, and moles are very territorial and will attack and kill any interlopers. However, if you do get rid of that mole you will quickly get another. People have, since at least the 16th century, been truing to "get rid of the moles" with no success yet although I have a friend that traps 20 or so every year, for the last 30 years, and thinks he is starting to win that battle.
An expensive way to deter them is to spray 1 pint of castor oil, mixed into a 1 quart hose end sprayer, over 2,500 square feet every 6 to 8 weeks. The anti mole sprays sold in the stores are not strong enough since there is less than 1 pint of castor oil in each quart and they tell you to apply that to 10,000 square feet.
