Foamy stuff on plants

| I just noticed that my Coreopsis tinctoria has several of these foamy ball-like things on several branches. It's moist, kind of like a watery shave cream. What is causing it?

If that looks like and feels like spit they are spittlesbugs, the larva of a leafhopper. Sometimes simply hosing the plant will get rid of both since washing the spit, that is a cover for the larva, can expose them to predators or might cause the larva to dehydrate and die. As a rule spittlebugs do not harm the plants. |
