anyone know why type of wasp this is?

they are swarming a plant on my terrace (not actually swarming but they hang out in "gangs" of 5-10 and freak me out). They are not at all aggressive and I am just curious (although I am considering getting rid of their much-loved plant)

Polistes dominulus, the European paper wasp.

Probably collecting pollen (protein) and/or critters.
