Small red beetle making holes in leaves

| I've been finding small holes in leaves throughout my garden, throughout the summer. I finally found the culprit (of course, there may be many kinds, but this matched the small round holes, unlike the larger holes and slashes produced by slugs, for example). It was on the underside of a morning glory leaf. It was about 1/4" (or slightly smaller), somewhat squarish, and bright red. I picked it off, but before I could kill it, it fell down. My finger was irritated but okay after washing. Anyone have any ideas what this is? And what to do about it?
Thanks for any input!

| Boxelder bug has some red, but it's not round and it's far larger than 1/4 inch. |

Thanks for the responses. Since my posting, I saw yet another beetle (?), also making holes on the morning glory leaf. This was a decidedly unpretty, tiny bug, grayish, sort of teardrop-shaped, smaller than 1/4". What do people think of insecticides make from neem? I have some and thought I'd use it. Thanks, Judy |
