Hornet - What Kind?

This is the second one I killed. They have been landing on my front step near my mulch bed in the mornings. Its about an inch and a half long. Today I noticed a third one out there. Always one. Strange. I have seen these before in past years but rarely.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hornet

It is difficult to see in the picture but most likely is not anything that needs to be killed.

It appears to be one of these:

Not particularly aggressive so there is no good reason to kill them.

Ok Kimmsr, lets say that it flies at my head every time I go out the front door and doesn't change its course until I duck, flinch, and wave my hands at it trying to deflect it? Good enough reason yet? Or should I pursue a passivist approach until I have an icecube on a swollen lump on my head or my kids' head?
