| This forum is for the discussion of Integrated Pest Management, commonly known as "IPM." This is a set of methods used to maintain healthy gardens with primarily natural controls and thereby minimize situations in which chemicals need to be used.
Please ask questions about chemicals on a more appropriate forum. |

| IPM (by definition) employs an assortment of control measures, including cultural, physical, biological, and chemical and involves prevention, observation, and intervention measures. Chemical control MAY mean synthetic pesticides and it may mean 'natural' pesticides. I think that this is a very good forum for people to ask questions about chemicals as we have lots of leeway in education in here. We can steer people into improved pest management by helping them understand more about their plant, their pests, and the environment.

| Integrated Pest Managment is a 5 step process to be used when you have a problem. 1. Identify the problem 2. Determine if some kind of control measure needs to be taken. 3. Look for the least toxic means of control. 4. Apply that least toxic means of control. 5. Evaluate that action. Did it do what needed to be done or is something more needed? Return to step one. One of the goals of IPM is to reduce the amount of synthetic pesticides used since most all are very braod spectrum poisons that have very large deterimental affects on our environment, as well as our genetic makeup. |
