Little red bugs that hop

I have an infestation of little red bugs that hop quite far when you disturb them. They even make a sound when a bunch of them hop at once, sort of like lots of mini grasshoppers. They ended up all over my clothes when I was trying to harvest some veggies. They are on top of the leaves (not underneath) of everything in my vegetable garden. They are perhaps twice the size of a period. I can't make out any features because they are so small, but they are clearly visible as little dark red spots all over the plants. I saw a few on my parsely, then I was busy and didn't go out in my garden for a week or so. Now they are everywhere! The only damage that is visible to the plants so far is that a few of the bugs seem to leave behind a small black spot when you knock them off. I have been reading up on spider mites, but it sounds like those are too small to see and live underneath the leaves of plants. Any ideas?

The pictures of leaf hoppers look like a different shape than my bugs. Mine are quite round. I probably gave the wrong impression when I compared them to mini grasshoppers. Also, I'm noticing that some are brown. Also, when I say they hop, I would say it is like those shooter weeds that shoot seeds when you touch them - the bugs go flying about that far.

Whoops, it looks like I lied and screwed up! First, the bugs are not exactly round, now that I've had a chance to look at them through a telephoto lense and take a picture. Second, I said I would post a picture of them here, but I can't. So it's on to Garden Clinic forum so I can post a picture.
