Some people swear by the Juicy Fruit method when dealing with gopher eradiction. Does it really work?

Short answer: No!

This falls in to the myth category along with feeding grits, or rice, to ants so they explode. Supposedly gophers, moles, voles, etc. cannot digest the gum and it plugs them up and they die as a result of being unable to now evacuate waste. Since the length of time that would take is fairly long no one has really seen this happen, and in zoos where similar rodents do get gum, not on purpose, do not die from ingesting that gum.

I tried it, and they actually pushed it back out of the holes

My experience is that it does not work at all. I find Black Hole traps to work very well.
