Growing Irises in So Cal

Last year a neighbor gave me a clump of irises from his mother's yard. The only place I had for them was on the north side with very little winter sun, but almost full summer sun. They were spectacular! I was just checking them and there are new shoots popping up everywhere. I am wondering if they did so well because they had been divided? Should I divide again before any more growth occurs or leave them alone? When & what do I feed them? I don't know the variety. They just are big, fairly tall and deep purple so who knows? Thank you so much for you help.
