moving iris

I moved into my house in Seattle about a year and a half ago. There is a bed of irises in an area of my yard that I'd like to repurpose for a veggie garden this year. Would it be a huge mistake to dig them up/move them at this point in the year? They didn't produce many blooms last summer and I suspect that they probably need to be thinned anyway.

Totally OK if you don't care about missing bloom. The only possible problem I see is if they're uprooted, replanted and you have lots more rainfall, they may rot. You could put them in a paper bag and replant at the beginning of summer. (cut surface of rhizomes need to callus over for a day or two before replanting).

Thanks, I suspected that missing a blooming season might be the outcome, which is ok. So sounds like I should wait until we have a few dry days ahead to dig them up and let them dry & callus. Thanks!
