| I miss the iris we had in New Hampshire. Some of the catalogs I have received recently say that their iris will grow in zone 9. My sister who has lived down here for many yers and is a tremendous gardner says no.
ANybody have any experience? Thanks very much. |

| "Pure As Gold" grows and blooms in Honolulu, zone 10. However, I think the high humidity keeps it from growing vigorously. |

Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I just recently joined the 21st cenury, and your string came up on a search of zone 9. There are undoubtedly some differences between our climates, but I'm sure that we share hot summers and mild winters. Iris do fine here, in fact there are several commercial iris growers in zone 9 Arizona! So, the only barrier to growing bearded Iris in your area may be the summer rainy season, which could rot some varieties as they lay dormant, especially arilbreds--fast drainage will be a must. There, as here, the mild winters will probably also inhibit many of the dwarf varieties, but tall bearded, miniature tall bearded, border bearded, and many of the intermediate kinds should do fine. Hope I'm in time for you to find and plant some. Best of bloom to you! : ) |
