Transplant from GA garden to WI

I was visiting my grandmother in Georgia and she sent me home with some irises and said just go ahead and plant them when you get home. In Wisconsin, we will still have freezing temps at night for quite some time.
When can I plant them?
Will they be okay out of soil until then?
Can I plant them now?
What should I do otherwise if I can't?

The ground is probably still quite hard there. Just put them in a cool place & hold them til the ground can be dug. No need to try to pot them & don't try to keep them damp, more problem with rot than drying out. They can be out of the soil quite a while with no problems. You can plant them before last frosts if you want, they can handle quite a bit of chill.
This is all assuming they are bearded iris. Other types would be handled differently.
