Another ID?

Nancy

I don't really have much hope to ID this one, I know there are lots of blues out there, & blues seem so hard to photograph. My photos always turn out much lighter than they really are.

This is a short iris, might be considered a border bearded, although I know I have some that are listed as tall beardeds the same height as this, about 26" or so. Not as dark as Victoria Falls, much darker than Silverado. Large flower for the height, very pretty blue.

The iris names I have traded for over the years(yes, I like blue):

Sonata in Blue

Rapture in Blue

Color Me Blue

Pacific Tide

Sonata is Blue is the shortest one listed, but taller than mine at 31". This is blooming with my mid season bloomers, but then I have some EM & ML starting to bloom now too, if that helps.

Just thought of another iris I have. Got this one several years ago & looked at the time right compared to some photos I found, so have accepted it as Mary Geddes all along. I just found MG on a site that lists it as 38" tall. Mine is much shorter, 28" or so.

The blue is a nice height- I love the shorter irises because I want them at the front of the beds. I like the color on that one too.

Renee, it is rather a nice height. I quite like the border & IB sized iris. Some of the taller iris flop in our winds here, although haven't had that trouble this year. We've been fortunate & missed the really big storms & except for a couple of iris that seem to automatically flop, they all look good. This one is such a beautiful color, as close to a true blue to my eyes as any I have. Aquawise suggested Into the Blue, but that is too tall too. My photo is a bit misleading too, looking lighter a more lavender than blue. Doesn't help to ID when your camera won't get the color right, does it? I just looked at the scroll bar beside this message block, & the blue is that color on my monitor.

It hit me as Rapture in Blue but who knows?

A thing about height. It can vary a lot on some cultivars. I've seen Victoria Falls grow as tall as 5 feet plus!

It has been in bloom a couple of days now, here is what the bloom looks like now

Honestly, it looks rather lavender, but it is really more blue. I agree about height! Some years iris get amazingly taller than other years. Last year I had one Dusky Challenger bloom that was double the size of others. If it does the same thing this year, I think I'll separate that one plant out. Same thing with blooming season-some of my supposedly mid season bloomers bloom before the earlier blooming ones, some ML bloomers are right in there with the Mid season ones. Who knows!

flowergirl, how tall does your Silent Strings get? I did get Silent Strings a few years ago, thought it had died, but maybe not. However, one site I found says Silent Strings only gets to about 16" tall, listing it as an intermediate. Mine isn't tall, but more like 25", some later stalks have been a bit taller too. It does look right for Silent Strings, but it also looks like Sonata in Blue, which is actually closer in height. Like I've mentioned before though, sometimes you just can't tell by height, it can vary. I know I have had both in my garden. Plus, I think I know where I planted Silent strings, & this isn't growing there. But then, I am constantly moving stuff around, so can't tell by that either :)
