Looks like an SDB (standard dwarf bearded). The stalks on mine are just emerging from the fans here.

Because you said many years ago, I thought 'Ritz' (from the 60's) could be a variety to look into for its id. There are countless iris varieties out there and there's no guarantee that I've stumbled upon the name of yours.

So, please don't share it under a (potentially) false name until you obtain a start of a named variety that resembles yours and compare them side-by-side. I would never want to be responsible for the spreading of false information, but it might be a place to start.

Rebloom is sporadic (at best) here and I would expect that yours doesn't carry that gene. I always say "you'd be amazed the rules that iris break", but I wouldn't expect rebloom.

Thanks so much for looking at my pic. When I said many years ago I meant maybe 8-10. I did some lengthy pic searching and might have found my iris at this site. It is the 16th photo on the page:
* DOUBLE BYTE (Sutton 97) Fragrant lemon yellow with an almond thumbprint on the falls.
The "*" indicates that it occasionally reblooms in that Virginia location. And mine ARE fragrant.
I may mark my plants with this ID....

Does not appear to me to be Double Byte, but Ritz might be it. Might you be able to get another pic from above as the bloom opens?

Hi Sue. Here's an overhead pic. Sorry it's a little blurry. One of the reasons I thought it might be the Double Byte because my flower is a sort of washed out yellow, while the pic I've found of the Ritz is a real yellow color.

Besides the thumbprint (As Nichol's calls it) being a slightly different color, I don't think yours goes out as closely to the edges of the falls as their pic does. The beard on theirs is almost white too, don't you think?
