Replanted iris with rhiz showing--can mulch cover rhiz?

On the advice of the iris sharpies on this forum, I replanted my "all leaves, no flowers" iris rhizomes in a sunnier place, and made sure the rhizomes' upper surface was above the soil. Now it's time to apply mulch to that flower bed. Can the mulch (Scott's NatureScapes finely shredded bark) cover the rhizomes' upper surface?

The iris survived their transplant and seem OK. When might I expect some flowers, if I am to see any from this new location? I don't even have any idea of what color the flowers might be, since this iris was either already in my garden plot when I bought my co-op or a neighbor decided to secretly gift me.
