Hi Helen,
I think if you find some rot on the rhizomes you can cut off the soft part and let it dry out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Here in Socal it is so hot that I can usually just leave the rhizome in the ground and cut off the soft part, because it dries out in the ground, but you may need to dig yours up.
