when to divide ...?

My iris bed has gotten so crowded & colors mixed over the years. This year I have marked on the stems the various colors so will take a couple of each color & replant & keep separate from each other now !! When is the best time to dig (should I clip the foliage back a ways then?) & replant the labeled colors ? Some have never bloomed (too deep?) so will replant them to a separate area & give them one more chance to bloom ... or toss them!

Thanks for any ideas!

Beardeds often sulk a year or two after division.

Thank you 'iris gal' ... this link was just what I needed !!
Now I can get to work making an entirely new iris bed with the colors separated as they were intended.

Oh, I thought I now had the idea of how to divide iris... but I think I really need some pictures/photos!!! I dug up the massive bed (the ones that bloomed I tagged with the color so I could keep each color) but I see so many 'appendages' (some with & some w/o any roots on them) off the flowering iris stalk & have no idea of which/all I need to keep & replant? The flowering one I guess will not bloom again? Any good site to go to for some explanation/drawing/photo of the dividing procedure?
Also, should the divisions with the roots be planted so the small roots don't dry out? I am SO ignorant of what I need to do after READING the descriptions... so think some site SHOWING photos/drawings would be of a lot of help!!

Google "dividing iris" and click on "images" or "videos". I'm sure there is something that can help.
