What are reasons Iris won't bloom?

A lot of my iris didn't bloom this year or last. What would be some of the reasons that they wouldn't bloom and what do you suggest? Should I cut the fans back on those that haven't bloomed and dig them up in the Fall and replant them? Maybe my husband planted them too deep? This is the second year I think for the yellow Iris..should I give them another year and then dig them up? What do you do when your iris finish blooming? Do you cut the fans back?

Assuming that they are bearded irises, there could be any number of reasons.

The FAQ covers them quite well. In my opinion, being crowded, not enough sun, and planted too deeply are the biggest reasons why they don't bloom.

Have they ever bloomed well since they were planted? How many years have they been planted? If improperly planted in the first place (too closely together) they can soon become too crowded to bloom.
