Growing iris in containers?

alisande

A wicked infestation of the groundcover weed Germander Speedwell, which began some years ago, has forced me to give up most of my flower gardening. Some plants don't seem as bothered by it as others, but the iris are the most affected. As we know, they don't like to be smothered.

I moved many of the irises to a new spot, but now that area, too, has been invaded. The speedwell is everywhere--lawn, rock garden, perennial beds. I thought maybe I had planted it a long time ago by mistake, but I'm told it's all over the county.

I really would like to rescue at least some of the irises. Schreiner's website talks about growing iris in containers, so I assume it can be done--although they seem to assume one would want to do this indoors. They recommend leaving the pots out all winter, and then bringing them in when the iris start to bud in spring.

I would like to plant them in containers, possibly very large containers, and leave them out all year round. Has anyone done this successfully?

Thanks! Here are some images from previous years:
