Need information for much loved iris, which I know nothing about.

Hope someone can fill me in. :) When a dear friend's mother (a second mother to me) passed away, she gave me some iris (bulbs?) (rhizomes?). Anyway, I planted them and they grew. And grew. And spread. Now I need to move them. For various reasons, I don't want them by the mailbox, at least not so many! I guess my questions are:

1. What type of Iris is this? They are much more purple than they look in the photos.

2. When can I move these?

3. Any chance they'd live in a large container? I will be moving in a year or two and would like to take them with me...at least some of them.

All information is welcome and much appreciated.

Bearded iris may be moved right after bloom up to 6 weeks before frost. They need time for root growth before winter. Since they like to "travel" you need a large container if they are going to live there ~~ like a 1/2 barrel. If they will be out of ground for only a few months use whatever pot will fit. They can even be dug and kept dry in paperbags for several months. Do a search on overwinter.
