Thinning irises really helped

Have 7 areas of irises around our pool. Last year had less than 10 blooms because the rhizomes were so thick. So I thinned out the approximately 1000 rhizomes to about 80. This year we have 26 blooms and I expect at least 50 next year. Awesome advice from this forum!!

I remember your photos, edweather. I'm glad the dividing helped you get nice flowers. Did you end up moving any of the gravel mulch, or did you put it back in the beds?

Thanks. No, the gravel is exactly where it was. The irises are growing so well, I can't even imagine them growing any better. The gravel mulch is around the whole pool and would be a big job to change it. Everything growing in the mulch seems to love it.
