Two Toned Purple Iris With Purple Stain At Base Of Leaves

Hi,

I have this iris that was given to me by a sweet older lady. She is 79 years young, and is seen working daily in her garden with a straw hat on. She didnt know the variety, but said it had been passed around forever. Even her "mama" had it. This iris is a light two toned purple, and has a purple stain at the base of the leaves. It looks just like a bearded iris, but it doesnt get as tall. Maybe 4/5 inches smaller. I would LOVE if anyone knew what kind of iris this is. I trade plants regular on the plant exchange, and have traded this iris a few times. Mostly in hopes someone could tell me what they were, but no one has. Hi, I'm no expert on the old iris but interested in them. You might see if you can find it at the website of the Historical Iris Preservation Society.

If you don't find it there, go back to their "Table of Contents" link and look on their sellers list for online catalogs.

I have one very similar, the base of the leaves look just like that. I was told that it is Rhein Nix. However, when you compare the few online sites with this, they vary. The link above has Rhein Nix, but doesn't look quite like mine, but I know I have found another site that looks exactly like it. Some sites list it as Tall bearded, others say it is intermediate. Mine in person look more like yours than in mine

Look at NANCY ORNE (Sturtevant, 1921) TB, M. S9M.
It's on the HIPS website I posted above. Sure looks like it and description of foliage is "deeply tinged at base".

I cant thank you all enough for your replys. I know i would have never found out if I hadnt asked here. Well I looked at both irises and believe it to be nancy orne. In my opinion the picture at the hips website was identicle to mine. ngraham thanks for your picture. Nice iris by the way! Oh and I cant forget thanking sue for getting my pictures up! gardenweb wouldnt be the same without her! darla

Hi Darla, I may have one like it, do you have the exact height by any chance?
When you need to identify an iris, the height and flower size are very important.
It narrows the search when you know the classification.
I found several with the exact same shade but too tall.

Mine by the way is 27" tall.
I wrote the name in one of my old garden journals but I can't remember which, so it's going to be a long search.
