i would NOT be without one .... try to find one with a metal handle ... the plastic ones tend to break ...

as for digging.. in my sand.. all the soil simple flakes away ... so whatever is most handy is what is used ... but if i use the shovel.. i just dig a foot out so as to try not to cut off all the root tips ...

To lift the whole iris clump, I like a fork. To split the clump and leave half behind, I prefer a shovel. My 89 percent sandy soil is pretty easy digging.

Is there a difference between a spading fork and a digging fork or do you feel they are the same. One book calls it one thing and another calls it something else. Confusing..

In Kansas, we call it a potato fork.

I agree I prefer a fork and then if needed break them up with a shovel. The fork is also the only way to dig peonies!

Went down to Home Depot and got my digging fork today.
The plant/flower truck had been in this morrning with a new load of pretty flowers. Very tempting but I didn't buy nothing but my fork! Don't want to buy anything else until I get rid of the Iris on Saturday and the daff fans haved died back. That way I can see how much space I have.

Where can I find a metal handled fork at, I have looked everywhere, even online?
