I emailed them to see why 5 of their iris rotten here in California when they came from Oregon. They took full responds ability and are going to send replacements. I didn't expect that. I just want to know how to prevent it.

It's not just California. Big fat rhizomes sometimes are not 'hardened' off for a different climate. I'd suggest rinsing again in 10% chlorine water before planting, to hopefully destroy the rot bacteria. Keep an eye on them, and when in the ground, if you detect rot early, sprinkle with comet or ajax.
