Non-reblooming bearded irises are probably a good bet. They come in almost every color, except for a true red. People will probably chime in with other recommendations as well, perhaps Siberians do well in your area.

Historic irises tend to be the most vigorous growers. They have been around for a long time as pass-a-long plants, and have proven themselves. Newer cultivars have fancier shapes with ruffles, lace, and big flowers.
