transplanting irises

So, I happily took the irises I got from my neighbor and planted them, nicely spaced in my garden. I see a lot of the rhizomes in her garden of established plants rest right on the surface of the ground. I planted them with the green part of the leaves at soil level. But when I put the leaves standing in an upright position, the rhizomes had to slant down underneath the soil to anywhere from 1-2 inches deep. My soil is amended clay with fair drainage. Water can stand in indentations after a heavy rain for an hour or two. Am I going to be in trouble with the rhizomes that deep? I have to assume they either were that deep due to overcrowding or that the leafs must have been slanted pretty crookedly. Should I replant them in a different way?
