Why do different iris have different UWTB?

Anyone read Kurt Vonnegut? UWTB is an acronym from one of his books and stands for "Universal Will To Become". It seems like when some of my iris show color at the tip of their buds they are open the next day, while some will tantalize me for a week in that state. I have noticed how some irises grow and increase more quickly than others, and hybridizers maybe try to select for that vigor. This year when things have been so cold and late, and I have been very impatiently waiting for buds to open, it is just curious to me how differently they behave.
