vegan fertilizer for partial-bloomers?

hi. i'm in the poconos, northeasten PA. in october '08 i planted 4 irises, trying my best to follow the nursery's instructions. they were supposed to bloom in may '09, but, they bloomed only leaves - no petals, no stems. i went back & asked someone at the nursery, who told me, "add some bonemeal and they should bloom next year". but, i try my best to use only products with only vegan ingredients, that is - no animal-derived ingredients at all. so, what vegan-friendly equivalent to bonemal do you recommend?
thanks,

There are many reasons why your iris may not bloom. Not all will bloom the following summer from planting. Read the FAQ. No need to use bonemeal, that's pretty old fashioned although some would like it becuase it is "natural."

Many irises take a year to get established. They need lots of sun, and the top of the rhizome should be above soil level. They don't need to be fertilized much- I never fertilize mine. If you decide to fertilize, wait until early next spring and use a low nitrogen product. Good luck! Renee

As Renee said it is quite normal for beardeds to take a year, even 2 sometimes, to settle in. To know if your soil is deficient in phosphorus and potash, both of which rhizomes, you would have to do a soil test. If you dislike bonemeal, superphosphate is another source or phosphorus. Don't know its base. You can burn chicken/fish bones to supply nutrients more quickly. This type of raw compost used as is would take forever to break down and animals may root it up. More knowledgeable info might be at the Soil, Compost & Mulch or Organic Gardening forums.
