I.D. please?

Twenty years ago we moved to a house that had no plants around it except for some overgrown hostas. My new neighbour must have decided I needed to beautify the place because when I got home one day I found 5 clumps of 'dirt' on the lawn. After puzzling over them for a bit, I heard a giggle and a head poked up over the hedge and he said 'I give you some flowers'. Two of them were irises. He did not know the names but they turned out to be quite beautiful. Now I'm trying to make a list of my plants so I would like to try and find out the names. They are both tall bearded, about 40", the purple one has a strong grape-like scent, the blue and white one is not strongly scented. Any ideas who they are? Thanks. Marg

The one on the bottom looks like stepping out,not sure about the top one though.

My guess is Southland Grape and Stepping Out. ???? Both are old varieties.

I have looked at pictures of both Stepping Out and Southland Grape. I believe that Stepping Out is correct but Southland Grape looked like it was more lavender. Mine has the dark purple, velvety falls, gold beard and lavender standards. The flowers are also huge. Marg

The Southland Grape often photographs very light when in reality it is very dark purple. I think it is the brownish red overlay that makes it look so light. I know there is another one with the same look and grapey fragrance but of course I can't think of it at the moment!

The other one I was thinking about is called Moby Grape but it was introduced in the late 90's so maybe not.

The bottom one looks like it could maybe be Jessie's Song as well. Either way, I love them!

sirmatthew, I also thought of Jesse's Song but the pictures and descriptions I've seen say it's more lavender. It is gorgeous tho. Mine is darker. I believe it is definitely Stepping Out - even the beard is the right colour. I'm just glad I've finally found out the names of them! Marg
