Ack! I made things worse!

Hi all --

So my irises were browning, tilting to the side, and barely blooming... I thought maybe I had an iris borer problem, so I dug one up, divided it, cut the fans, did the whole dip-in-weak-bleach-solution bit, and then replanted. Now those replants actually look horrible -- like they are rotting at the tops? I dunked the whole things in bleach when I divided them, fans and all -- could that be the problem? Am I supposed to only dunk the roots? Here's a picture of their current (pathetic) state...

Any thoughts on where I went wrong / if they'll recover?

This is the season for beardeds to be looking tired with outer leaves beginning to age. What we don't see is the growth underneath. Do not be tempted to overwater.

They all tend to look like yours after complete divison (removing from soil & cutting apart).

Phew! Glad to hear I hadn't ruined them for good. For the future -- when you dip in the bleach solution, do you dip just the roots or the fans as well?

I've put them in the solution with the fans sticking out of it for about 10 min. Then rinsed. But I don't do it anymore as rot only occurred once in one cultivar. That's the time people usually do it ~ after they've cut away all rot.

How deep are they planted?? I don;t see any of the rhizome showing and it should be showing a little.
