Dividing Siberian Iris

maplecat

Hello, very long time reader, first time poster.

I need to divide a siberian iris to fill another bed. This guy has been in the ground for at least 15 years, and the center is completely died out. I figure I can get at least 8 good divisions from it.

I live in the pacific northwest, and this has been an extremely cool and wet summer (so far), so I don't think weather will be a problem, but I will water regularly anyway. The soil is heavy clay, but I will amend as suggested.

I am wondering if I need to cut the foliage back? As you can imagine, it is long and floppy. I am anxious to do it, because just looking at it makes my back hurt, and my husband has offered to help me dig it out, and I want to get his while his enthusiasm is up. Thanks!
