I'm moving and need to store my Iris

Yipes, we sold our house and are moving into a rental until we can find our next home and I have alot of family heirloom iris that I will be moving with me. They were my mother's and grandmother's so I want to make sure I do this right.

I am not sure of the best way to store them until I can plant them again. Insight and advise would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks,

any friends or family available locally with some spare space for a small holding bed??? .. you could probably get a hundred in a plot of 10 by 10 feet ...

Here in Las Cruces, we pot them in 4 - 6" pots and keep them in light shade. That gives them a head start at putting down roots. I had 12 rhizomes of Jolt given to me last November and grew them in a window box to make sure they were really marked correctly. To my surprise they bloomed beautifully, late, but beautifully.

when i moved.. i moved 1500 pots... what a nightmare.. hence finding a garden plot to forget about them for a while ...

like i didnt have so many house related issues to deal with besides the freakin pots ...

now if you are talking about 10 pots..a go for it ...

WOW Ken, I admire you alot!! That indeed sounds like a nightmare, but I bet after you got them to their new home and in the ground and blooming, you were glad you did it!
So pots I shall do, yup, prob about 10-15. NOW, I am using the moisture control mix for my other plants ( so I don't kill them) but don't want to use that for my irises due to fear of rot. What planting medium do you think would do them best? My guess is they won't go into the ground before fall ( please, I hope we have found a house by then!)

How about the soil they were growing in? If you leave any behind you might ask the new owners if you could return to gather divisions. Distance?

Potting is the best way to go as roots will be viable to more quickly establish than if they were held in a paper bag. Worst case scenario, new home is not available until spring. You'll be glad you did the work involved in potting. I like to have the named painted on the pot as well as a label.

Definately no moisture granules.

I use commercial potting soil (Supersoil) in my pots. It's relatively inexpensive and drains well, which prevents against rot. If your garden soil doesn't drain well, rot can be a problem with potted iris.

Iris divisions will do just fine in 6" pots. They will even grow for several years in pots and still bloom. I use my regular garden soil which drains reasonably well and I have not had any rhizome rot. With only 10-15 divisions, you should have it easy.
