Moving with my plants

Posted by massha 5-6 (My Page) on

Greetings,

I am going to move in a couple weeks, from zone 5a to zone 6 (a?). I would like to take my irises, my hostas and maybe my peonies with me. (I will probably post this in hosta section as well, sorry for cross-post...)

How should I handle this best? Can I dig the irises out a few days in advance and plant then a few days after the move? Should I wrap them in cloth? Keep in the fridge? Should I plant them in a pot and treat as houseplant for a couple weeks till I get to plant it?

Really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Iris (bearded ones anyway) are pretty rugged. If you have very many, I would just dig them and trim them, and then store then in a mesh or paper bag where they are kept fairly dry until you get them planted out.

Others might suggest potting them up though, but if you have very many, that could be a major chore with the other plants that should maybe be potted.

Have fun. Do you know if there are existing beds at the new place, or will you be starting from scratch?

Since you'll be 6 weeks ahead of the first frost I'd put them in bags as Chemocurl suggests.
