I always enjoy reading the awards. Particularly interesting this year are the Honorable Mentions for TBs. "Ink Patterns" got the most votes, and I almost ordered that this year. I had no idea it was popular enough to have placed first for that year's intros. Just saw a clump shot of it recently, though, and it really was nice.
Golden Panther has been a fantastic grower here in Zone 8. Looks like the iris Paul Black is destined for a Dykes Medal soon. I haven't grown it yet, but LOVE its parent "Tom Johnson."
Mike, I looked up "Ink Patterns". That clump shot on Dave's Garden says it all: I don't think I have seen a denser crowd of tall bearded irises.
I like the iris "Paul Black" and many of my favorite cultivars turn out to be hybridized by Mr. Black or Mr. Johnson. Why is this iris considered to be so special? I'm still learning...
I am looking very forward to growing Paul Black, which I believe is, very much revered for its color, very nice fragrance, and good plant habits. Its parent, Tom Johnson, is the same. This is a fantastic grower for me, and it was a Dykes runner-up, if I recall correctly.
Check the link to a pic I posted of TJ a couple of years ago. Photos really don't do it justice, though. Check out my other photos there at Dave's Garden and ask if there are questions about any in particular. I keep really good notes on growth habits. Also, I am dying to trade with someone as I have mucho surplus to be dug in September (as posted in the Exchange Forum)--LOL..
Hi Mike, Unfortunately, I live in California and it is illegal to import live plants, even iris rhizomes. It's probably not a good idea anyway, since the iris borer has not made it here yet.
Your photo of TJ knocked my socks off. It really does show the colors and habit of the iris, unlike most of the close-up shots. Thanks for sharing it with me. Renee
