Should I divide these after only one year of growth?

This is my "Footloose" tall bearded that I just got from Schreiners last year. It has multiplied very well. It might be hard to tell from the picture but there are already more new "eyes" (???) growing from these large rhizomes. I know they say only divide every 3-4 years but I am wondering how you all decide when to divide. I thought I saw somewhere that Schreiners digs their Iris every year?

Well, Schreiner's has ideal climate conditions. I don't see any rhizomes crawling on top of other rhizomes yet, and it appears that you now have a nice clump. By the way, mine often take a year off of blooming after being divided. It's a shock to the plant to divide and replant. I have managed to kill a number of plants by moving them every year.

I agree, you should get good blooms from this one, but dividing might give some of them a setback. As Renee said, rhizomes tend to start growing on top of each other & causing problems, that is when you really need to divide. I just divided my Footloose which has been in place about 6 years, although I have dug into it to trade a couple of times. It is a great iris that multiplies really well & looks like yours is doing great.
