under the iris

I have a smal back yard, part of which was paved with interlocking brick laid over screenings and gravel, over heavy clay. I want to remove some of the interlocking and re-plant some of my irises there.

Here's my thinking: 1)Irises love drainage 2) Irises need to be planted shallowly 3) digging up the gravel/screenings is going to be a lot of work : could I just work in say 4" of compost to the upper 2" of the screenings, plant in that top layer and then "let 'er rip"?

How crazy am I? A huge part of me says that this might actually be ideal. What am I missing? This seems to good to be true...
