Warning Southern Gardeners: I lost my whole Mid-America Shipment

Just a word up to those in the southern US. I've been planting my irises in the summer for the past few years with no negative consequences; however, this past couple of weeks, due to heavy moisture, I am now reaping the results of my stupidity. I had four new irises planted in mid-August, and every one rotted like I've never seen: the fans and area of the rhizome directly under the fans were just turned into mush. Normally, it's dry enough that nothing happens. Joseph Ghio sends his rhizomes in mid-July, and those I planted from him back in July are absolutely thriving.

I hope fellow warm weather gardeners will heed my advice and plant later. I cannot believe this has happened and won't make this mistake again.

What a shock! Were the iris from a source you've used before?

2 weeks and total rot! Amazing.

A good way to prevent rot is to coat the rizhome with anti-bacgterial hand soap. It works nearly every time.

Whoops, now I see the supplier. I wonder if others receiving orders at the same time had your disaster? Oregon did have that horrible heat wave 3 weeks ago or so. Were the rhizomes dry and solid?

Guys,
Please, please let me clarify that I am in no way blaming the supplier. I have ordered from them before, ALWAYS with wonderful results. They couldn't be better in terms of shipping large, healthy plants. The plants I received were in great shape.

This is my fault b/c even though it doesn't normally rain heavily for days on end, it is always a possibility, and I should have kept that in mind. That precip combined with heat is just lethal. I guess I'm just kicking myself out loud.

I am happy to hear about the hand soap trick. That is a method I'll use for sure. Curious: since you are from Georgia, when do you plant new rhizomes?
