I recently got permission from a friend to dig up as many irises as I wanted from her deceased mother's garden. Of course, in August all evidence of color is gone but I could tell by the size of the leaves & rhizomes that some are large(tall), some medium, some smaller. I've kept each clump together for now but plan to separate them when planting. (I'll keep like rhizomes together -separated but together) How would you plant them now -just randomly but sort of sizing them and them re-arrange next summer after labeling them by color? Or do you like the random color look?

| What a nice thing! Growing plants is a lovely way to remember someone. I think your original idea of planting according to height is sound. Some of the surprises may be really pleasant when they bloom. Some may bloom at different times as well, so you should write this down somewhere if you want to transplant later for particular effects. Don't forget to post some photos this spring... Renee |
