The Iris Fairy Came to Visit Me

Look what I found outside my gate a few weeks ago! No note, no idea where they came from so I waited a week to see if someone would step forward. I asked around the neighbourhood ... nothing! No one is fessing up to this lovely gift.

I'm a farm girl who grew up with vegetable gardens .. I have lots of experience with house plants but very little with outdoor flowers, so I searched this Iris forum and since we live in wet, NW Washington I planted them like "ducks" (thanks for that reference fellow posters)

I have to wait until spring to see what colour they are and pray they survive the winter critters eating them.

Any other advice?

Last night after I planted them next to some really out of control Rhods that I had just butchered back. The bed still needs a border and some other work but I hope they like it there.

Wonderful! Lucky you- someone likes you.

Does that bed get at least six hours of sun? It looks a bit shady. Irises will put up nice foliage in the shade, but they rarely bloom in it.

It gets morning sun and evening sun, but maybe not quite 6 hours. Thanks for that information I didn't know. I'll have to pay more attention to it to know for sure. If they don't flower next year I'll move them to a better spot.

I agree with Renee about the sun--I have very limited room and one of my beds only gets half day of sun--it does matter, unfortunately. My bloom is not as good back there. I'd also add that good drainage is essential. Standing water or poorly drained soil can lead to rot.
