Pinpoint holes on bottom of Rhizomes

I have been doing some overdue cleanup in my iris bed (about 50 plants) and have noticed that I have some signs of borer damage which I have researched on the threads here and will be dealing with.

However, I have also noticed that some of the Rhizomes have a small pattern of holes on the bottom that look like they were poked with a sharp pencil.

The pattern looks very much like the pattern of the roots on the bottom of other Rhizomes.

Are these remnants of roots that have died... or is it insect damage.

The Rhizomes that had borer issues had large holes that hollowed out the Rhizomes - so pretty obvious something had taken up residence... but these smaller holes look more benign.

The Rhizomes are otherwise firm... but I do not want to replant them if this is an infestation of something.

Comments appreciated. Thank you.
