copper medallion and flags

Today I made my usual mid-morning visit to my mom who now lives in an assisted facility. And as always I have a conversation topic in mind. Today the topic was the iris, "Copper Medallion" that I had been searching for to complete my collection. As I was talking she interrupted and said in a stern voice, "Rodney, do you not know, these are not called iris, they are called "flags."

Then in a clear voice she told me about Aunt Ancie who lived with my grandparents and grew flags. Big white flowers and purple ones and some had two colors. And every summer she would divide them and take them to church to give away, and to the hosiery mill in Berthadale near McComb to give them away, or trade for other flowers. A perfect description of "pass a longs" a staple of southern gardening life.

Today is a good day
