How long after digging do I have before must replant

I have an iris bed I would like to move to another location. When I dig up the iris from their current bed, how long do I have until they must be replanted & how should I care for them in-between time?

Thank you.

You have until 6 weeks before the first frost.

Some cultivars may overwinter, unplanted, in a cold basement. Not recommended.

Meanwhile, keep them in a cool, dry, shaded place.

Well...it always depends on the conditions. I received some RZ from another local gardener that she said she forgot for over a year in her garage.

I got them to grow easily this Spring. Go figure.

Thanks iris_gal & regattagirl. I appreciate your responses & it's good to know that I probably will be able to dig up one bed w/o having to transplant them immediately. I hope to not have too many days go by, however, between the digging & the replanting. Hope you are enjoying your summers...
