What did you add this year?

As many suppliers end their ordering season, the question arises, which iris did you add to your garden this year?

I chose mostly ones I've seen in person or heard highly recommended.

Lace Artistry - swoon at this warm pink
Lark Rise - bitone vy pale blue-lavender/mid lav
Loyalist - rich violet-purp?? pics vary
Martel - reds-maroons; color called incomparable
Mountain Violet - wht/pastel violet
Pink Taffeta - old Dykes winner, pastel pink
Purple Pepper - saw this speckled lav-purp - nicer than others
Rapture in Blue - hope this blue-lav is as pretty as pics, AM'94
Rococo - neat dog-ear falls on soft purp plicata
Tempting Fate - first high contrast for me - vy pale blue/deepest purple
Tropical Fruit - oranges, yummy happy colors - lost it a few years back
Uncle Charlie - vy pale blue; hear this one doesn't like to bloom every year; pics knocked me out

And after seeing some photos of NOT Prissy Miss (was that you Laetitia) from Big Box store pkg., I couldn't resist temptation. Hope they're as pretty as the ones posted.

RE: What did you add this year?

I wound up with 47 pots of new irises that range from Lloyd Austin's White Unicorn to Ghio's Comfortable with a lot of others in between from Schreiners, Iris Colorado, Rainbow Acres, Keith Keppel, Rockytop, Hidden Acres, Superstition, Toadland, Mid America, Lily Auction, and Snowpeak. I really didn't order this many, but with all of the bonuses included, it added up to 47. And, I thought I was slowing down! Next year, I vow to order only one iris from a vendor, but I'll probably wind up with at least thirty. Sometimes, the bonus turns out to be better than the one you ordered, particularly if you order current introductions.

RE: What did you add this year?

This is my first year ordering Iris. I have a few I planted earlier this year from a farmer and then some bagged ones I planted I bought from Walmart, but this will be my first major foray into buying irises online to plant. I ordered:

Carnival Song
Chasing Rainbows
Dynamite
Gay Parasol
Merry Madrigal
Painted Clouds
Painted Pictures
Pass the Wine
Red at Night
Stairway to Heaven
Sultan's Palace

RE: What did you add this year?

Walter, how do you stand the shipping charges?!

I was out planting tonight. We had an amazing thunder/lightning storm last night that luckily only hit and burned two houses. No one hurt! Thought it would end our muggy spell. Oh no.

I am so excited about ordering this year that I forgot a few:
ALICE GOODMAN - one of the most beautiful pinks IMO
BELVI QUEEN - for fall colors rebloom
GLAD CHOICE - pictures show blue-pink to warm pink ??? (praised on Iris-Photo)
FJORD - vy pastel blue; gorgeous in pictures
LARK RISE - soft bitone lavender-blue; silken texture

RE: What did you add this year?

I added about 100 to my collection. Almost all of these were iris from Walter Moores, Schreiners and Barry Blyth. These were from various commercial sources. Many are or soon will be historic. I had two small orders cancelled from two growers in Texas. I think they had too much rain. Lee Mincy

RE: What did you add this year?

This year I ordered from growers I had not ordered from before due to the praises of them on this forum. I odered from Rockytop, Keith Keppel, and Superstition. The praises were worthy. So, this means I have added the ones below either by request or bonus:

Gypsy Lord
Sweetly Sung
Stop Flirting
Guardian Angel
Ennoble
Laced Cotton
Bowled Over
Purple Ritz
Cafe Bleu
Open Sea
Treasured
Fabulous One
Rippling River
Venetian Glass
Royal Sterling
T-Rex
Fiery Temper
Temple of Time
Team Spirit
Adoregon
Too Below Zero
Rio
Bamboo Shadows
Party of One
Firebird Suite
Kitty Kay
Shanti
Light My Path

If we have a good Spring next year, I will hope to see some of these in person or in living iris. Should be sweet!

RE: What did you add this year?

Iris gal,

Maybe I confused you. I didn't have the irises shipped already potted; I potted them after I got them.

I let the rhizomes dry under airconditioning on my spare bedroom floor for about a month before I pot them. The ones from Superstition have the best 'shelf/floor life.' These arrived rather early and hardly any of them had dried up, curly outer leaves when I potted them a week or so ago. All the others had curly dried up leaves I had to pull off. I won't unpot until October or November.

If I had planted them in the garden, they would all be dead now. We had four days of 108o and nearly a month without rainfall. And, there was stiffling humidity to go with all of that, making the temp. feel like 115o.

RE: What did you add this year?

Oh my goodness Walter I thought it was hot here in Texas. Did I understand someone say they bought iris's from you this year? I didn't know you sold them too. I've been trying to read most of the post here regarding iris's but I'm not very good at this internet and computer stuff.

You folks are right. Alot of people here in Texas lost a great many of their iris's due to all the rain. I'm still trying every which way I can to replace all of mine. A couple of people sent me a some for postage. I was touched by their kindness and sharing what they could with a fellow gardner in distress. Some people promised to send plants if I sent postage and they have yet to honor their end of the deal.

I got my order from Cooley's recently. I got almost 100 from them. Way too many to list. Then I found out about the EOS sale at Malevil Iris Gardens and ordered over 100 from Dana. There's were about 1/3 the price of Cooleys. Then I found another link on here for Wild Iris Rows and barely squeaked in under their deadline of today. I think I ordered 45 from Greg.

I'm a older lady on a fixed income and I couldn't really afford to buy all these iris's. However I couldn't stand the thought of not having my place painted like a rainbow this coming spring either. I have been so bad I even invested some money in daylilies.

My purchases will not nearly replace what I lost. However it will put me back on the road to recovery. Now I just hope I don't get sick or have an emergency around the house. (grin)
Sometimes flowers are better than medicine.

Happy Gardening Everyone and may your iris's bring you as much joy as mine always have.

Best Regards
Marian

RE: What did you add this year?

I just sell my current introductions and had an ad in Tall Talk, a magazine published by the Tall Bearded Iris Society.
A lot of dealers have my older things.

RE: What did you add this year?

Walter I knew you were very knowledgeable regarding iris's and other iris vendors.

I have always grown iris's, but only for myself and never really cared about knowing the names of them. I can honestly say I love just about every iris I've ever seen. Some are more outstanding than others but they are all beautiful in their own way.

I had no ideal there were so many places to get iris's from at what I consider a reasonable price. Although I've grown them for years most I've bought from Cooleys or a gentleman in North Texas who grew several thousand iris and daylilies. I would go by his house during bloom season and pick out the ones I wanted that fall.

When I lived in North Texas I had a friend that belonged to the Iris Society. We would buy and share with one another so we both had starts of all the iris's we ordered. Unfortunately she lost most of her iris's this summer too.
I don't think other gardeners can understand and be able to relate to it. That is unless they were to walk outside, look at all their beautiful plants and then think how terrible if would be if they were just all gone. It really is heartbreaking!

Recently I ran across Tall Talk on the internet. I really should subscribe to it. Something on one of the cover pages told about the best options for keeping grass out of your iris beds. I wrote the information on a sticky note and only the good lord up above knows where that note is at this time. Actually I had forgotten about Tall Talk since then. When I finish this post I'm going to see if I can google the site again and order it.

Unfortunately this summer I lost most of my older iris's that came from my mothers and grandmothers gardens. I guess that is the part that hurts the most.

Maybe you can tell me and others what you have to sell and how much they are. I've spent way more than I could afford for this year.

I'm including my email because I'm not very good at this stuff and you will probably need it if you send me a list of what you have.

Another thing, would you be so kind as to tell me why you plant your iris's in pots? I've never heard of this. Everyone I know just plants them directly in the ground here in Texas. Does it have something to do with the weather where you live? Do you trim the roots way back too?

I guess I really should read more about a plant I've grown for years. Mine have always multiplied like crazy with very little care. That is another reason they are one of my favorite flowers. If you go somewhere for a couple of weeks they will still be alive when you get back. (grin)

Happy Gardening,
Marian AKA Lovely Iris

RE: What did you add this year?

I didn't have any pinks in the past, so the really big switch was adding some warm pinks and some pink/lavendar bitones. I hope they will work!

Pinks:
heidi alaina (lauer)
joyce ragle (kerr)
passion play (lauer)
kitty kay (keppel)
corps de ballet (hager)
lotus land (keppel)
augustine (shick)
all about spring (kerr)

Pink & lavendar:
announcement (balck)
symphony of light (meininger)
french can can (cayeaux)
edge of eden (roberts)

I have a bunch of other new things I'm excited about, but the one thing I enjoy each year is nursing some "toes" from recent introductions. These are the tiny little nobs on the defunct "mother rhizome". They can often be had for a couple of dollars at the iris society sales.

I have "toes" of Parisian Dawn (Keppel 06), Magic Happens and Inside Job (both Ghio 06, I think). Of course they take an extra year to bloom, but it is fun to conjure up a blooming plant from something that looked like it was headed for the compost heap!

Terry

P.S. I also added Walter's Violet Shimmer

RE: What did you add this year?

I don't even have a list yet..All of mine are still sitting in the dining room waiting for the temps to cool off and the rains to come so we can get out there and plant them.

 o
RE: What did you add this year?

I never heard of selling "toes"! Unreal! Doubt that that could be pulled off here because some people think $2.00 (our minimum) is too much for a fat rhizome and fan.

Passing thought....how do you label a "toe?"

RE: planting in pots

I have mine all potted up, in 4 inch pots, as Mr. Moores suggested. I will plant them within a couple of weeks, so it probably wasn't necessary, but I didn't have the beds ready for them yet. Also we have had some 90 plus temps here the past couple of weeks. They are showing new growth already. I've been potting them up for years now, and I just think it gets them off to a good start. Of course, as Mr. Moores has said, if the planting conditions are right in your gardens when you get them, just plant them out. But potting them up really works for me.

RE: What did you add this year?

Well Walter, that shows how high the cost of living is in California!!!
The toes I've gotten have usually been part of our auction of recent iries, but I will admit that the competition for toes is not very fierce.

The toes I've bought came attached to the mother rhizome, which was written on with marker. Otherwise, as you suggest, it would be pretty hard to mark them--they are usually somewhere between a marble and a BB in size! I assume that the rhizome supplies a little bit of energy for the toe.

But fat fans for $2 sounds mighty good to me!

RE: What did you add this year?

Now I'm seriously wishing I had room to add more irises, especially the historics I love, after reading about all the wonderful ones everyone has added to their gardens this year. I haven't visited the iris forum for a while, but I sure had some nice bloom from my irises this spring. Maybe I could squeeze in a couple, here and there, among my other obsessions (daylilies, peonies, lilacs, etc.). Must - get - bigger - yard . . . .

RE: What did you add this year?

Five orders, only got caught with one! Four orders came on different days, while hubby had gone to town for one reason or another, and right before I had to go to work at 3 o'clock. I got up early and had them planted before he got up. Only got caught with the last order, but luckily only had 5 plants! How is that for luck!
