Holes in Rhizomes

asana

Hello All,

About a week ago I finished planting about 30 new rhizomes in raised beds. Now, upon inspection, about one third of them have 1/4" to 1/2" *shallow* but even holes on the outer surface of the rhizomes, and sawdust-like traces left behind on the soil. Otherwise, the plants look healthy, and have even started to sprout other small fans.

What am I dealing with here? I was under the impression that borers drill down from the fans, not the rhizomes. Could slugs do this?

And lastly, what do I do?

Many thanks for any/all help!
