| I just wished he posted the parents. Like Blue Rising sure seems like a child of Quite the Reverse, and Glamour Pants a child of Scarlet Embers. |

My guess is that Glamour Pants is from Wearing Rubies or a close relative, or possibly Indulgence. Last year Barry introduced Soiree Girl which is a Fogbound child. My guess is that Blue Rising is from the same line. |

| The parentage on Glamour Pants is: G66-E, Gypsy Geena sib, X Drinks at Sunset Was lucky enough to see it in bloom at Keppel's this spring. Had to add onto my order after seeing it, very nice! Robin Shadlow zone 5 NE |

| I don't know all of the in's and out's of the registration procedure with the American Iris Society and the Australian Iris Society. I have wondered about the awards of the Australian Iris Society and if they are the same as the American Iris Society. I know over the years there have been English Dykes, French Dykes, Australian Dykes but they don't have the prestige of the American Dykes Medal and some haven't been awarded in years. I know that in order for Barry Blyth to win American Iris Society Awards, the irises must first be introduced in the United States and then in Australia, if he wants them considered for Australian awards. Keith Keppel has introduced a few and Barry has won AIS awards, but, of course, Keith cannot grow them all. It seems a shame that since Blyth irises are so popular in the United States they cannot be awarded AIS awards. They cannot even be on the popularity poll (Symposium) unless they were introduced in the U.S. first. Sad for a fellow who has contributed so much to irisdom. Other questions I don't know the answers to are the majority of Austrialian, French, English irises registered with AIS? I know Grovesnor and Blyth from Australia, Cayeaux from France, but are they the only ones registering with the US? Here lately quite a number have been registered from Poland and Slavic countries. One was quite popular at the Fresno Convention. I guess Mike Lowe knows all of the answers. It would make a nice Bulletin article, I would think. Blyth is right up there with cutting edge irises but is denied all of the glory in my opinion. Walter Moores |

| Walter in that Bulletin article I would like to see an explanation of why only North America has to pay a registration fee. The other part of the world does it free. Must be the AIS is loaded with money. I have heard Barry Blyth pays even though he does not have to. And I don't mind paying my share. Mike G |

| The Dykes Medal is actually given by the British I.S. which denoted one for British origin, one for French origin, one for North American origin, and recently instituted one for southern hemisphere origination. The respective Societies set the rules for awarding them. Some years ago, the AIS had revisited the groundrules and came up with what we have. Foreign originations are available for all AIS awards (except the DM, since it must be North American origination) if first introduced in North America. Berry has not won an Australian DM because candidates must be submitted to their test garden procedure, and he has chosen not to do so. The AIS is the international register for all irises except bulbous. It cooperates with other National societies in this process and ultimately all are approved by the AIS and appear in the R&I. Some hybridizers for their own reasons have chosen not register their irises in this process and hence their vitals are not available. BTW, check the import insert in the Tempo Two catalog to see pics of some future intros to blow your socks off. |

| Irisrover, Your post was better than a Bulletin article. You got right to the meat of the matter. Thanks! I know there is an index-in-progress of AIS Bulletins but it is a guarded secret. We could answer a lot of questions ourselves and know the truth of many matters by looking up our own questions. But, I do say, the Forum is a lot of fun and I enjoy it. There are a lot of silent viewers I wish would share their knowledge with us. Walter Moores |

Walter, the reason Barry Blyth does not take the Australasian Dykes medal every year, is simply that he does not enter for it. He has not entered an iris in any of the Dykes competition gardens here for many years. That is good for us amateur hybridisers, as it gives us a running chance, although Graeme Grosvenor usually takes it anyway. I think that is very generous of Barry, considering that one of the competition gardes is at Tempo Two. The Australasian Dykes is actually awarded by the British Iris Society, and as far as I know had been awarded here every year for some time. To us in Australia it is far more important than the US dykes, as it is more representative of the type of irises that do well HERE. Most of the Iris society members here are NOT members of the AIS. How many American growers do you know who are members of the ISA? Blyth irises sell well in the US, and it would be great for one to take out the Dykes medal, but it won't effect his popularity in Australia one bit. The AIS holds the world registry for all irises except Dutch. I am not entirely sure that applies to all Japanese iris bred in Japan? It is fairly common for most plants now to have a world wide registry for names, although roses seem to still be in chaos. All the breeders I know have registered their irises with the AIS, except for those who have bred their own seedlings, given them garden names, and distributed them under such names. I avoid those irises like the plague. Personally I have not yet registered a seedling. I intend to put several in the competition garden next year, for the first time. I am fussy, and also my main interest is medians and PCI, which do not get the attention that the TB's do over here. My ambition is of course, to win the ADM with a PCI or an IB. Hahahahahahahaha (ooh that hurts!) Cheers, Jan |

Irisrover, don't tease like that. I am waiting for my catalog. Can anyone please put the intro's pictures on the forum so even those not receiving the catalog can enjoy them? Please, please. |

| Thanks, gmason, I had already done that, but I now do have my catalog. It has much more in it than His website and the "future intros" are really cool and not on his website, as of the original writing of my email. I really don't know of a local group to pool with on ordering from him. If there is one in the Kansas City, MO area, please show yourself. |

Can anyone who has actually ordered from Australia give us dreamers an idea of the cost involved? Thanks! |
